A Tale Just So A Play by Mike Ostroski Copyright 2001 A Tale Just So is an adaptation of three of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories: How the Camel Got His Hump, The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo, and The Elephants' Child. FIRST PERFORMANCE: A Tale Just So opened at The Barter Theatre on July 11, 2001 as a For Kids, By Kids production through The Barter Player Company in which young actors from grades 3 to 12 participated as actors, designers, and stage managers. NUMBER OF ACTORS: The script calls for 12 actors to play 8 females and 4 males. The play, however, could easily be done with more than 12 actors and any combination of male or female actors. LENGTH: The play is 41 pages long and runs about 35 to 40 minutes without an intermission. STORYLINE: The King and Queen's child, Best Beloved, has not slept for days. The Royal Physicians say that if Best Beloved is not cured immediately, the child will not live to see another sunrise. The Queen has heard of the magic of the ancient Just So Stories and has summoned the best story-telling clans in the kingdom to "story-tell" her child to sleep. The King believes this to be a waste of precious time that should be used to find a cure in something more practical than the telling of stories. Two of the Kingdom's greatest Story-Telling Clans arrive and compete to save Best Beloved through the bold retelling of the three Just So Stories mentioned above.
